Washington, DC
Author of the book, THE BORN FREES: Writing with the Girls of Gugulethu, the story of a generation of young South African women coming of age after apartheid, told through the lens of a creative writing club (W. W. Norton).
In a starred review, Library Journal said, “Incredible and inspiring, this account belongs in every library and on every bookshelf.” The Born Frees was named a Top Ten book for the Amelia Bloomer Project by the American Library Association’s Social Responsibility Roundtable, and a top book of 2015 by Foreign Policy Interrupted.
I'm a narrative journalist, a longtime activist, and Fulbright Scholar to South Africa. Based in DC with semi-regular jaunts back to Cape Town. Previously on staff with Bread for the World and Sojourners, where I remain a long-time contributing writer. I’m especially passionate about global justice for women and girls, ending gender-based violence, and equipping people to tell their stories in their own words.
